Wendy L. Wiebalk graduated cum laude, with Honors in English, from Muhlenberg College, where she received the Futter Prize for Excellence in German Studies and was the recipient of an Applied Music Scholarship. She then received a Siegfried Scholarship to attend the College of William in Mary, where she received her J.D. She was named the Outstanding Trial Advocate of the graduating class by the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association.
Ms. Wiebalk began her career on the civil defense side, initially focusing on personal injury, toxic tort and dental malpractice. She then developed an interest, and expertise, in labor and employment law, as well as in public entity law and civil rights litigation. She was named by the New Jersey Supreme Court as a Certified Civil Trial Attorney in 1997 and has consistently been re-certified. She has also served over the years as an arbitrator, mediator, Inns of Court mentor and mock trial judge.
After two decades of working as an insurance defense litigator, in 2013, Ms. Wiebalk went to work for a former client as an Assistant Vice President and Litigation Manager for two joint insurance funds that served 50 New Jersey municipalities. She was responsible for the supervision of all professional lines claims including employment practices liability, police practices and civil rights liability, public official liability, and all claims featuring insurance coverage issues. She was also a frequent bulletin writer and seminar presenter and lectured for groups including the New Jersey State Bar Association on topics such as Social Media-Liability Exposures & Coverage Issues, Hot Topics in Labor and Employment Law, EPL Insurance and How it Changes the Game, and Mediating Discrimination and Whistleblowing Disputes.
Ms. Wiebalk then accepted a unique invitation from a former client to become the Human Resources Director and Assistant Manager for the City of Englewood. During her time with Englewood, she was responsible for overseeing 10 department heads, 350 full-time employees and 150 part-time employees. Her responsibilities included overseeing all benefits and pension programs; all Notices of Claim, lawsuits, and workers compensation claims; all FMLA, FLA and ADA issues; and job-related changes of any kind. Further, she was responsible for providing or procuring training on a variety of topics including but not limited to sensitivity, diversity, customer service, leadership, and ethics and professionalism with a constant promotion of a “team” approach to leadership and an emphasis on consistency, transparency and fairness.
On a pro bono basis, Ms. Wiebalk is proud to serve on the Board of Trustees of State Theatre New Jersey, the non-profit and charitable arts organization located in New Brunswick.
A lifelong soccer fan, Ms. Wiebalk holds her national “D” license and has coached all ages, gender formats, and skill levels since 2000. She has also been an avid long-distance runner since her youth and has run more than a dozen half and full marathons in the past decade.
Ms. Wiebalk resides in Piscataway with her husband, their twins, and a multitude of pets.
